If there is one country that can stand testament to the word “Heaven on Earth”, it should be Switzerland. Picturesque landscapes, scenic houses and a backdrop of the Alps aptly describes Switzerland. This is one destination I’ve always had it only in my dreams and it pretty much came true this summer, through my Europe trip.So based on my visit I have written this 3 Days Switzerland Tour Itinerary.
With no official capital declared, Switzerland’s key cities include Zurich, Geneva and Bern.
What is Switzerland famous for?
Switzerland is famous for several things which includes : Swiss chocolates,Swiss Army Knife,Swiss Cheese, Swiss Watches ,the iron clad Swiss Banks and more importantly the world famous Swiss Alps
Currency: Swiss Francs (though Euro is accepted in alll places ,but in a 1:1 ratio), which can be a slight loss for you.
Transport : Buy yourself a Swiss Rail pass that helps you to save so much money during your stay in Switzerland
3 Days Switzerland Tour Itinerary
My Euro trip consisted of a 4 Nights 3 Days stay in the country of Switzerland. We stayed in a city called Uster, which is pretty close to Zurich. The 3 days trip included a trip to
- Rhine Falls in Schauffausen(Swiss-Germany border),
- Mount Titlis in Engelberg,
- Jungfraujoch in Bernese Alps (the topmost point of Europe) ,
- Interlaken & Lucerne
- and Zurich.
Rhine Falls in Schauffausen
Located on the German Swiss border , the Rhine falls is a beautiful sight to see and also happens to be the largest plain waterfalls in entire Europe. Some tour agencies even offer a boat ride, right under the waterfalls , which could be pretty thrilling.
Jungfraujoch, Bernese Alps
Having the topmost point of Europe, Jungfraujoch is a beautiful mountain located in the midst of Bernese Alps at a height of 3466 metres.
A cogwheel train takes you all the way to the top of Jungfraujoch from Grundelwald. This 1.5 hours train journey cutting through ice and tunnels can be quite unforgettable and immensely beautiful to the eye. The place has more than 9 things to do. This includes an Ice Palace, a Snow Fun Park, A Glacier Hike and even a Lindt chocolate showroom ! Of course you are never far away from Indian lunch , as you have a nice Indian restaurant called Bollywood in the first floor .
Skiing and other snow activities are available, but most are restricted to professionals and not for first timers. Especially,if you are brought here through a travel agency, indulging in snow sports may not be possible. Though you get to walk in the ice and throw some snow balls around.
Temperatures here can easily go upto -10C and you have to have some solid thermal wear to withstand it. You dont get to rent it anywhere (though you might be using it only once for this). Buying in Switzerland can be extremely expensive . Hence advisable to buy from your home country, wherever you are based out of.
Mount Titlis
Mount Titlis is a part of the Uri Alps, located near the town of Engelberg, standing at an height of 3238 metres. Yet another beautiful mountain range, and this time the trains are replaced by cable cars. The first level of cable cars is for winter sports/skiing while the second level is where the observatory is present.
Similar to Jungfrau, Mount Titlis offers a spectacular view of the snow clad mountains , Lindt Chocolate showrooms, Glacier caves and also a sprawling area to play in the snow. Additionally, you also get to do a cliff walk, a narrow hanging passage between two cliffs. The view from here can be quite amazing and it’s definitely worth a visit. If you’d prefer an Indian lunch , head to the restaurant in the ground floor than the ones available in the second or third levels.
Lucerne and Interlaken
Two other beautiful cities in Switzerland, these two are definitely a sight to behold.
-
Interlaken
Interlaken gets its name from the intersection of two lakes, namely Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. The city that lies between these two lakes, this picturesque town was made famous thanks to many Bollywood movies being shot here (Including Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge). If you are planning a trip to Switzerland without any tour agencies, do make it a point to stay in this city for atleast two days. You can also combine a Interlaken photo stop on the way back from Jungfraujoch.
-
Lucerne
Lucerne is another beautiful city that offers plenty of things . With a mesmerizing swiss mountain backdrop, head over to a small 1 hour cruise in Lake Lucerne, finish your shopping of momentos, chocolates and watches in the Bahnhofstrasse and quite simply live in the moment , admiring the beauty of the place
The famous Lion monument is also present here, designed quite beautifully by Bertel Thorvaldsen. This is to commemorate Swiss guards who laid down their lives protecting Marie Antoinette, during the French Revolution.
Zurich
One of the biggest cities in Switzerland (as far as I know), this is a pretty happening place in the country. Most companies are located out of Zurich and pretty much known to be the most expensive city in the world. There are plenty of things to do in this beautiful city. This includes visiting the famous lake Zurich, shopping at BahnhofStrasse, going to the Zoo or even simple ice skating in the rinks during winter.
Beautiful Switzerland! We had thought of going this year, but it'll have to wait. Lived 5 years in the French part. Just love it!
Thanks for Stopping by. Yes, Switzerland is an amazing place to be anytime of the year 🙂
Lucky that u were in France for 5 years. U must have seen the whole of Europe by then i guess
Any specific countries u recommend?
Nice Read!
Silly question but which thermal wear were you wearing or was it not that cold !
I was wearing a thermal wear(tshirt and pants),on top of it, a full hand double layered thick shirt which was primarily designed for cold weather, and on top of it a thick jacket. In addition woolen socks, woolen gloves and a head scarf.Despite all this it was still shivering. Temperature was -7C btw (on top of the mountain)
I need to ask how to reach these part from zurich…can you explain …
If you are planning to go to Jungfraujuch or Mount Titlis, you have trains that go here
You can buy the Swiss Rail pass which gives you unlimited rides to all over Switzerland
https://www.swiss-pass.ch/
Jungrfraujoch : You have to get down at Grundelwald and take another train up to the top
Titlis: You have to go to Engelber and take a cable Car / winch from the base station
Else much simpler option , whichever hotel you are staying, you can ask for a tour package to Jungfraujoch & Interlaken(1 day) and Mount Titlis &Lucerne (1 day).
Each of them would cost roughly 160-180 Euros (10-12K / person)
We too went to Switzerland this summer, and stayed at Wengen in Jungfraujoch. Switzerland is a beautiful country, and I must say the people are equally beautiful. Peace loving, a little layed back, and helpful. We did not take the service of any tour operator and planned the tour on our own. This gave us a lot of flexibility. Your write up has refreshed all the beautiful memories of the country.
